James Cowie

James Cowie is a rare breed: an expert all-rounder. With more than 45-years’ experience in business, James has held roles as CEO, CSO, Executive Manager, AVP and entrepreneur. The skills and experiences gained over the course of his career in technology, finance, health/medical, automotive, media and marketing, construction and education have given James unique insights into the running of successful businesses and the drivers of monetisation, profitability and business sustainability.

After a very successful career with large organizations, James established a business advisory, training and consulting firm, which he grew to be a very successful business with operations in New Zealand, Asia, UK and the USA. His clients were large international corporations with whom he consulted at all levels including with divisional heads and one-on-one with CEO’s and business owners. During this time, James earned the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) mark of excellence, which recognised him as a management consultant whose competency is certified and recognised worldwide. He was responsible for managing a portfolio of IT implementations, business consulting, customer engagement and business process outsourcing, and training for clients across Singapore, Malaysia, USA, China, India, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

James was responsible for all aspects of this organization, including systems, sales, delivery, client satisfaction, financial performance and human resource management including hiring, retention, utilisation, remuneration and promotion. In his roles at this firm, James was responsible for the implementation of a range of systems and the development of a range of products, services and training courses. The business was purchased by its largest customer as the basis on an internal professional services group.

Currently James works with entrepreneurs to help them solve issues, create value, monetize their business, raise funding, maximise growth, and improve performance through the application of his knowledge, skills and network, and by providing objective advice, expertise and specialist skills that the organization may be lacking. James serves as a non-executive director on several boards and has held a number of positions including Chairman, but still finds time to make voluntary contributions to the broader community.

James also acts as an Executive Coach to both Business Owners and Senior Executives world-wide, coaching executives from all areas in how to best position their businesses for scalable growth. Balancing his portfolio, James also selectively works with selected small-to-medium businesses to achieve breakthroughs and dramatic results. James has worked through a range of business cycles and brings his unique level of expertise and understanding business and economic cycles to bear to achieve exceptional results.

James has worked with many business turnarounds and rejuvenations, helping business owners and executives recognize the hidden value within their business. He has guided executives to focus on key elements to increase performance free up funding and deliver results that were previously considered unattainable. James was a director and chair of the International Association for Services Management and is a Coach for the Women in Business program and a judge at the annual Consensus Software Awards.

James has a history as an entrepreneur and has either founded or worked with others to found several successful startups. He has a strong background in developing revenues and in talent management, plus an extensive turnaround experience. He has driven positive change and high levels of customer engagement in organizations, while developing strong, sustainable cashflows.

James was the Chief Services Officer at Renaissance Corporation, New Zealand’s largest publicly listed education and technology company. He led the development of their nationwide service division. During his time there he consolidated Renaissance’ many disparate service, support and manufacturing operations under the YOOBEE brand, significantly reducing its cost base.

Prior to his time at Renaissance he was the CSO and Training Services Director of the publicly listed global interactive communication group, BlueFreeway. He built a global services team providing services to 540 staff servicing over 1,500 publishers and advertisers in 25 cities and 19 countries, prior to the company being sold to specialty media and communications company, IPMG.

James served as CSO of Citect, a public software company, and led global service and support efforts, creation of a 24*7 global, multi-language support centre and the Certification of Citect under the prestigious SCP Global Certification program. Citect was acquired by Schneider Electric.

Before joining Citect, James was Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Customer Service for Deutsche Bank. In this role he championed the restructuring of a customer service operation and the implementation of telephony systems and a large CRM system.

Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, James held numerous roles with Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) where he managed Services groups including a Field Service operation, a Professional Services Group and an entrepreneurial New Ventures Group. During his time at Digital, James developed and launched a number of products and services, delivering record revenue and profits.

James began his working career as an entrepreneur, developing a marine alarm, a hydraulic control system for boat drive and a series of electrical test products.

James has lived and worked in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Thailand, in roles that have seen him provide over 45-years of Customer Engagement and Consulting Services to clients in a number of industries.

James has qualifications in Environmental Management, Quality System, Information Security Management, Customer Service and Business.

James in a Rotarian and actively involved on community activities and is kept very busy by his 9 grandsons.
